Carl Borg

Born in 1998

My inspiration depends on the medium which the piece exists in – a piece which is conceived to exist in conjunction with other media requires the inspiration to come from the media itself, while a more abstract piece is normally inspired by theoretical concepts or techniques, as well as other forms of art. If a performer is envisaged for the piece, the player’s technical abilities and musical ideologies can also serve as a clear guideline and source of inspiration.

Born in Malta in 1998, Carl Borg was involved in music from an early age, starting his studies at the Imperial Band Club and eventually joining the Malta Youth Orchestra’s trumpet section. He attended numerous masterclasses with notable trumpet players, such as John Wallace, Antonio Vera Escribano, and Rudolph Korp, and was a passive participant in the Malta International Conducting Masterclass and Competition. Following private studies in performance and music theory, he read for a B. Mus. (Hons.), specialising in composition, at the University of Malta, where he also took classes in conducting with Prof. Michael Laus and Dr John Galea.

His output includes a trumpet concertino, pieces for smaller ensembles, a choral work, and music for media. Most recently, in 2021, Borg’s piece for solo trumpet, Scuttle, was selected as part of the ‘Say it in 60 Seconds’ project within the Oxford Festival of the Arts and is due to be recorded and featured in a live performance.
