"Sceptic" is a composition inspired by the thoughts and emotions of the residents of Cottonera as news of impending war or conflict begins to circulate. The piece starts by depicting a normal, quiet life, with subtle complexities that accompany everyday existence. This tranquility is gradually disrupted by the first hints of a possible war, marked by the emergence of the main theme.
As the narrative unfolds, the skepticism within the community begins to surface. People start to speculate on the how, when, and why of the situation, until these speculations transform into actual news. At this point, the music reaches its climax, capturing the heightened tension and uncertainty.
The focus then shifts to a couple discussing and envisioning a future that remains uncertain. Despite the skepticism that permeates their thoughts, there is an underlying hope for a better life that persists. This hopeful dialogue leads to the conclusion of the piece, fundamentally altering the initial concept. The music transitions methodically and regimentally, symbolizing the onset of war, where skepticism is replaced by the harsh reality of conflict that takes over people's lives.
Sceptic has been recorded by the Filarmonica di Firenze Giacchino Rossini under the direction of Prof. Giampaolo Lazzeri, in the composer's album "Pieces of Malta" in 2025.
