Tunes From Malta
Inspired by the collection of Maltese melodies gathered by Guze Cassar Pullicino and Charles Camilleri in their book "Maltese Oral Poetry & Folk Music," this composition brings together some of these melodies, many of which are almost forgotten while others are quite familiar to the Maltese people. The piece seamlessly transitions from one melody to another, creating a cohesive musical journey.
Among these melodies are "Il-Baqbaqum," "Orqod Orqod," "Il-Gimgha l-Kbira," "Pizzi Pizzi Kanna," the dance "Il-Maltija," and even the Maltese National Anthem. Additionally, it incorporates well-known rhythms used by Maltese composers such as Joseph Vella and Charles Camilleri himself.
"Tunes from Malta" aims to give these melodies new references and allow them to be enjoyed in a modern musical piece with more contemporary sounds.
Tunes From Malta has been recorded by the Filarmonica di Firenze Giacchino Rossini under the direction of Prof. Giampaolo Lazzeri, in the composer's album "Pieces of Malta" in 2025.
