Fantasia

Fantasia for solo piano. The term Fantasia can be defined as a "free musical composition structured according to the composer's fancy".  Fittingly, the piece is highly improvisatory in style but is clearly structured into three main sections. It is in the coda that the musical idea presented in the introductory bars returns to haunt the listener. Often, there are three simultaneously-occurring 'voices' in the music which appear in the piano's contrasting registers. Other techniques employed include the abrupt crossing over of hands, as well as fast, frenzied demi-semiquaver figures. Fantasia was written for the Victoria International Arts Festival, Gozo in 2009 where it was also premiered by the composer. The piece received its first UK performance on 31st August 2010 at St Marks Art Space in Edinburgh, where it was performed in a solo piano recital by Véronique Vella as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.  Although the composer has written a few chamber music works featuring the piano, Fantasia is her first solo work for the instrument. According to acclaimed composer and scholar Graham Hair of the University of Glasgow describes this work as "very idiomatically written for the piano and reflects compositional sophistication too."
