DUO II (1979) Flutes (one player) & piano
For the first London performance of this work Grech wrote the following:
“DUO II is one continuous movement subdivided into five short, contrasted sections. Section 1 ( Impetuoso) is for piccolo and piano with the two instruments contradicting each other. Section 2 is a brief dialogue between flute (sempre calmo) and piano (sempre agitato) interrupted by section 3 (Tempo di Valzer), in which we hear a hint of bygone times followed by interplay of opposed rhythmic elements. Section 4 (Arioso) consists of a lyrical alto flute line accompanied by isolated sounds, clusters and glissandi from the piano. Section 5 (Energico) juxtaposes conflicting elements, shared equally between flute and piano”.
