DUO I - 1977 Violin & Piano
Two possibilities are present when writing for such contrasting instruments as the violin and piano; either the composer treats these contrasts as a problem demanding a harmonious solution or he accepts the conflict and exploits it. In this work, Grech has chosen the latter course; the piece could well be sub-titled “Conflict”. The piano announces three concise ideas, which are separated by sustained sound on the violin. The third of these ideas leads into cadenza for the violin which is followed by a transition (violin and piano) into the second section (meno mosso). Here the writing is more subdued. The conflict lessens, but only momentarily. Gradually the instruments engage in an escalating battle for control over one another (section three) which dies away with the conflict unresolved.
