Christopher Muscat’s Quintessence for piano quintet is a work in four movements. The opening Quasi una fantasia’s wandering nature is mainly due to the free cadenzas played by the violin, viola and cello. The rhythmic second movement makes use of minimalist techniques in building up an exciting, forward-moving rhythmic fugue. The touching third movement is the most expressive of the whole work and gently leads the way to the aggressive final Allegro Barbaro that provides a fitting and exhilarating ending.
