MOUSE IN THE MACHINE – for Bb clarinet and piano

‘Mouse in the Machine’ is an entertaining duo for clarinet and piano set in three movements. The music portrays an inquisitive mouse, characterised by the clarinet, who ventures inside a machine, represented here by the piano. The first movement is slow and mysterious, suggesting the apprehensive mouse, curiously exploring the machine. The second movement is a scherzo for clarinet solo portraying the mouse prancing around his new territory. In the third and final movement the clarinet competes against the rhythmic ostinato patterns of the piano – as the mouse scrambles between the clockwork of the machine. In this final movement the pianist uses a wooden baton to produce a range of percussive textures which enhance the mechanical character of the music.
