High on Rapture – for string quartet

I, II, III

Each of the three movements is characterised by bold rhythms, dissonant clusters and harsh contrasts. Zahra is inspired by the brisk syncopated patterns of heavy metal riffs as well as the rhythmic and melodic complexity of rock guitar improvisations. In “High on Rapture” these influences are deconstructed and transformed within Zahra’s creative process to portray a distinctive contemporary aesthetic. The energetic character of the 1st and 3rd movements features a syncopated bass pulse throughout the movement. This infectious ostinato is challenged by irregular material in the higher register which creates a contrast to the rhythmic pattern. The 2nd movement is introduced by a menacing phrase on the viola over a regular pulsating pizzicato, followed by fragmented melodic shards from the two violin. As the music jolts through the syncopated rhythms it periodically resolves to a contrasting motif that induces an ironic scherzo character. Another important characteristic that can be traced in all three movements is the bass percussive clusters which propel the music erratically. The tension created by the dissonance and rhythmic conflicts unleashes vigorous melodic passages with bursts of piercing fragments, fast patterns, runs, shrieks and shrills, leading the music to an explosive finale.
